Origin & Diagnosis

The neural tube is definitively formed between the 22nd and 26th day after conception. If one or more vertebrae are not closed at this point, it is referred to as spina bifida. The diagnosis of spina bifida can be made at an early stage and, depending on the type of examination, the lesion can be described quite accurately. However, the prognosis regarding the future quality of life of this fetus as a person with spina bifida remains difficult.
Relevant tests for spina bifida include:
– blood test (AFP level determination)
– fetal ultrasound
– genetic testing via amniocentesis, after which a more exact diagnosis can be made.
Regarding the causes of spina bifida, we can state that it is a multi-factorial condition in which both hereditary and non-hereditary factors can play a role. Literature strongly refers to the lack of sufficient folic acid as one of the possible causes of spina bifida.
Prevention is, however, a means of avoiding this condition.
